Why Data Science?

With a background in finance, Dr. Shirley was drawn to data science because of its powerful applications in research and business. “Data-driven methods and skills are essential for business, research, decision-making, and innovation,” she explains. As the field of data science has grown in popularity, she has not only expanded her own expertise but has also been dedicated to preparing MTSU students to thrive in a data-driven world. This is one of the main reasons she has been involved with the creation of both the undergraduate and graduate degrees in Data Science here at MTSU and why she eventually took over the role as the director of the BS in Data Science.
